The story is pretty simple: Mario must collect seven Crystal Stars to reveal an ancient treasure behind the Thousand-Year Door. Of course, he can't do this alone! In each chapter, he meets a new partner who will journey with him on his quest.
There are intermissions between chapters where you play as Peach and Bowser. They both have their own side stories in relation to the main story.
Princess Peach is captured by Sir Grodus, who plans to use her as a vessel to revive the Shadow Queen. she meets a computer named TEC, who develops feelings for her after some kind of glitch. He helps Peach communicate with Mario by sending him emails.
There's not much gameplay going on in Peach's intermissions, with only a few minigames. I do think the relationship between TEC and Peach is very sweet.
Bowser's involvement doesn't play a major role in the main story like Mario and Peach do. He tries to collect seven Crystal Stars and find Peach, but always ends up being one step behind.
His gameplay is usually walking around towns in search for Crystal Stars and Peach. There are some platform levels in the style of classic Mario Bros, and my younger self thought that was the coolest thing. Instead of making Bowser another main antagonist, they made him a total doofus. He's the comic relief character in this game, and I love that.
The characters are probably one of my favorite parts of the game. I am not sure of the major changes they made to the writing, but it still felt as charming as the original. The fact that the remake made the characters more expressive is a cherry on top.
The game doesn't take itself too seriously. Though there are genuinely some heartfelt moments, like the relationship between TEC and Peach or Admiral Bobbery reading a letter from his deceased wife. Those kinds of moments you don't see often in Mario games.
The battle system could be considered a baby's first RPG. It's not bad by any means. It does have some depth going on, like the crowd mechanic, executing time attacks, stylish moves, and all that sort of stuff.
it's probably not my favorite thing in the game since there is a lot of backtracking, so I end up bumping into a few enemies back and forth. It's not so bad, I guess, if you need to level up. Then again, the game isn't overly difficult for me to grind, which is probably for the best.
With the game's overwhelming success, who knows if Nintendo's next Paper Mario will bring back its old formula. I never played the later Paper Mario games, so I can't say anything about those games. I think it's cool to see a traditional Paper Mario make a comeback, even if this one is a remake.
I think what I'm trying to say is remake good. Game good. Thanks for taking the time to read this. See you next time!
